Picking up on the slave/son contrast that Paul utilizes in his Adoption texts, Tim Chester writes:
“God sent his Son to buy our freedom. We’re no longer slaves with a slave master. Now we’re children with a Father. We don’t have to worry about proving ourselves, because God says: ‘You’re my child.’ We don’t have a spirit of fear, but a Spirit who prompts us to cry, ‘Abba Father.’ We don’t have to worry about the future because God has made us his heirs so that all his resources are ours. G. C. Berkouwer says: ‘The adoption to sons – that is the foundation of sanctification, the only foundation…In his faith each has all the possession he requires and can therefore freely and lovingly devote his entire life to the service of his fellowman’” (You Can Change, 36-37; emphasis mine).
