How real to you is the astounding reality of God’s delight in you as his beloved child? Believing that God is for us and not against us is one of the greatest challenges of daily Christian living. If you’re finding the reality of God’s love for you difficult to believe today, be encouraged by these thoughts from Scotty Smith, one of our speakers for our national conference next year in Louisville, Kentucky:
Because Jesus suffered the Father’s judicial disdain on the cross in our place, we now live in the Father’s impassioned delight—forever!
In his sovereign goodness, God has chosen to find great delight in relationship with ill-deserving. Astounding, isn’t it? I never learned that in Sunday school! And I never experienced his delight until many years after I’d become a Christian. The journey from the spiritual orphanage to the home of our Father’s delight travels through the hamlets and hideouts of our blindness, pride, and unbelief.
…A part of me desperately wants to believe that you are a God of eternal pleasure and happiness and that you do indeed love me with great delight. I get lost in amazement just trying to imagine what that would be like.
But another part of me remains incredulous. Visions of your pursuing love collide with how I have been trained to think of you all my life. Is it really true? Jesus, did your death on the cross completely pay the price for the many ways I fail you and ignore the Father? Did you actually merit salvation for me by your perfect obedience? I praise you. I thank you.
Make it real to me, God. Help me to really believe that all of my sins—past, present, and future—are forgiven. Help me know for sure that you will never be angry with me again, that your anger toward me and my sin was exhausted on Jesus. Give me power to believe that I am not just one of ka-jillion sheep that you will take to heaven someday but that I am one of your sons and daughters in whom you find great delight right now. I believe. Help me with fifteen tons of unbelief. In the name of your powerful Son, amen.
