Providing gospel-centered resources to mobilize the church for global orphan care.

Here I sit on my bed in Melbourne, Australia at 4:00am in the morning. Neither my body or mind will let me sleep any longer. Oh, and it is already Wednesday where I am.

The time (4:00am) and the day (Wednesday) got me to thinking about God my Father. If you’re reading this blog post in the North or South America or Europe, it is Tuesday where you are, which means you are reading something that I wrote on tomorrow! So that means God is your Father on Tuesday and is at the same time my Father on Wednesday. Wow.

God is certainly not a “one day at a time” Father. He is an eternal Father. His fatherly care for us is not confined by time or even by the calendars we live by. God our Father is never an on-again, off-again father. He is ever, always, and eternally Father. What He is for you on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, he is for me on November 16, 2011 . . . at the same time. As far as I’m concerned, this provides fresh insight into the truth that God “neither slumbers nor sleeps” (Psalm 121:4). What He is for you today on your side of the world, He is already for me tomorrow on my side.

One wonderful take away from this is that God absolutely loves being Father. It’s not only what He does 24/7. Being a Father is who He is.

In Tim Chester’s sermon at Together for Adoption Phoenix, he quoted from Mike Reeves’ forthcoming book, The Good God. On a side note, Mike’s book is one that I will have in my hands to devour the minute it comes out. Mike Reeves comments:

It is only when we see that God rules his creation as a kind and loving Father that we will be moved to delight in his providence. We might acknowledge that the rule of some heavenly policeman was just, but we could never take delight in his regime as we can delight in the tender care of a father …

Since God is, before all things, a Father, and not primarily Creator or Ruler, all his ways are beautifully fatherly. It is not that this God ‘does’ being Father as a day-job, only to kick back in the evenings as plain old ‘God’. It is not that he has a nice blob of fatherly icing on top. He is Father. All the way down. Thus all that he does he does as Father. That is who he is. He creates as a Father and he rules as a Father; and that means the way he rules over creation is most unlike the way any other God would rule over creation.

As Mike Reeves so eloquently put it, that’s one big reason why He is my Father today on Wednesday, November 16th and your Father today on Tuesday, November 15th. We have a Father like no other father in the history of time and eternity. There is no Father like God the Father. Revel in His Fatherly love and care for you today, a love and care that are already in full-swing for me tomorrow. He can be trusted and enjoyed every today and tomorrow, whether you are awake today or just trying to survive a stressful day tomorrow.
