Early this week I had the privilege of interviewing Katie Davis about her book (Kisses from Katie: A Story of Relentless Love and Redemption) and about life in Uganda (learn how you can win a copy of Katie’s book at the bottom of this post). Katie’s answers were rich, edifying and enlightening. The questions I asked her are below.

In this interview, I asked Katie five questions. Note: The volume on my audio was too low. Katie’s, however, was fine.

  1. What is it about Jesus that freed you to let go of what appeared to be an idyllic life of an American teenage and move to Uganda?
  2. When you first moved to Uganda, was getting used to life there more difficult than you anticipated? What was one of your most difficult experiences?
  3. What is life like for the average orphan in Uganda?
  4. What have you learned from the Ugandan church?
  5. Tell us about your girls back in Uganda. What’s your typical day with them look like?

My endorsement of Kisses from Katie: A Story of Relentless Love and Redemption (read more endorsements):

“As I read Katie’s book, I felt like I was reading Amy Carmichael. As Amy did in her life, Katie shows Jesus to be amazingly wonderful not only in what she writes, but also in how she selflessly cares for the fatherless. If you want to love Jesus more and better understand his love for the least of these, read Kisses from Katie. She is for our generation what Amy was for hers: a hero in fulfilling God’s call to care for orphans.”

I heard about Katie from a girl at my church who was wrecked by Katie’s blog. That girl now heads up our church’s expanding African refugee ministry while she she prepares to go to Uganda herself. God currently has me mentoring nine fatherless kids from my neighborhood, three of whom are also refugees. The book would serve as an encouragement from someone who is further along in her journey and a tool to help equip myself and those I serve alongside in our pursuit of being a family to those who have none.
