Providing gospel-centered resources to mobilize the church for global orphan care.

Can you love a child you adopt the same as you love your biological children?

In part two of this series, I looked at why we can’t tie our love to a biological component and why our love for our children cannot be based on an instinctual love that is somehow tied to shared genes.

In part one, I wrote about the importance of being able to answer “yes!” to this question, because if we cannot answer yes, then our love for our children (biological or not) shows evidence of a works-based understanding of love.

In this last post of this series, I want to look to God’s word to answer this question.

The fact is, if you are a Christian, then you are not God’s biological child. Who is your biological father?

The Devil. Yes, the devil is your birth father. Satan was your evil, abusive father who you were enslaved to.  Dig into these passages for some great insights on this topic:

I John 3:1-10, Hebrews 2:14-18

I John gives us the picture of what it is like to be without Christ. Those who do not follow Christ are called, “children of the devil” and this is who we all once were (1 Corinthians 6:11)! We were born a slave to sin.  Our thoughts, actions, and words were full of deceit, selfishness, lust, greed, and pride.  When God looked at us,  he saw a man or woman in total rebellion to him, partnering with Satan gearing up to plot an attack against himself and everything that is good, righteous, and holy.

If we water down who we were before Christ then we water down a very important aspect of the gospel itself. If we act as though we were never truly wicked or unholy then we stop seeing grace as a free gift and begin to treat it as an earned right. It is only in understanding how wicked we were and how much we deserved death that we can begin to worship and praise God for his great grace in our lives.

But we were not just forgiven.  We were not just pardoned. We are adopted.  “See what great love the father has lavished upon us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1-10) Have you tasted to sweet love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ? Do you know the depths of God’s love that rescued you and made you his child?

If the answer is yes, then how can we NOT love all children that God has given us, regardless of their genetic make up? Regardless of how much they look like us? Regardless of how similar their athletic or academic talent is to us? If we are struggling to love a child deeply, then there is something askew in our understanding of God’s love for us. Dive deeply into understanding the Father’s love for you and you will have the freedom to love adopted children as though they were your biological children and biological children as though they were adopted.
