Adoption: The Very Heart of the Gospel

by Dan Cruver Published Jun 26, 2008

Dr. Howard Griffith, Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology at RTS, writes:

“Seen in the light of the ultimate goal of God’s work, adoption is the very heart of the gospel” (“‘The First Title of the Spirit’: Adoption in Calvin’s Soteriology.” In Evangelical Quarterly 73, 152).

If our adoption in Christ is this important, it should not surprise us, then, that James identifies the care of orphans in their affliction as an essential mark of pure religion (James 1:27).

This website has been very helpful as I teach a class on spiritual adoption at our PCA church–thanks you! We’re set to cover the role of the Spirit in our adoption next week and the article you quote from here would be useful as I prepare. I scoured Google for a copy of it but to no avail. Do you know how I could obtain a copy quickly?

Also, I hope to attend the TFA conference in Greenville this fall.
